About Us

Like the wood he works with, Max is a product of the land. The son of a local farming family, he was born and raised on the Greenough flats, just south of the major regional centre of Geraldton, on the coastline of Western Australia.

His childhood was spent surrounded by examples of his father’s and grandfather’s creative designs for farm machinery and furniture, and still to this day the family farmstead ‘Corringle’ is a virtual gallery for such functional ingenuity. Not only did this provide valuable influence for Max’s flair for wood craftsmanship, but it also provided a deep insight and understanding of the practical uses of the raw materials around him.

At the age of ten, Max and his lovingly handmade sand boards could be seen sliding cleanly down the faces of the dunes, and by fourteen his hill trolleys and lackey guns were inevitably already winning him an honourable reputation amongst his peers.

Increasingly intricate and more skilled designs were to follow, and Max’s love of woodwork eventually led him to the Geraldton Building Company, where he successfully completed a four year apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery. After spending time travelling the country and developing his skills, he jumped to work alongside his cousin Gary Bennett of ‘JahRoc’, the most awarded furniture design company in Australia.

Returning home to Greenough, filled with fresh enthusiasm and promising ideas, Max began the construction of his own workshop and gallery. The magnificent structural style of the building itself very much reflects his own feel for solid, statement designs. It didn’t take long for Greenough Woodworks to flourish into what it is today, a birthplace for unique designs, built to last for generations to come, and unrivalled in the beauty of their natural, rustic charm.

Traditional furniture making methods are set to continue with the inclusion of Grant Voesenek in the Greenough Woodworks.

Following the completion of a school based traineeship he was employed as a full time furniture making apprentice. In 2011 Grant will finish his apprenticeship, making him the fourth apprentice Max has trained to continue the line of Greenough Woodworks tradesmen.

Grant has a natural flair for design and makes exquisite furniture. This was recognised when he won the State "Hand Skills" competition across all TAFE Colleges.

In Grant's words "It's always easy to get out of bed and go to work when you love it!"

His pasttimes include surfing and racing speedway in his Greenough Woodworks sponsored EL Falcon production sedan.
